Edible landscaping
Designing Sustainable Food Gardens in the Estrie Region
More and more homeowners are looking to transform their property into a living, productive, and beautiful space. Edible landscaping makes it possible to combine thoughtful design, biodiversity, and food autonomy — without sacrificing aesthetics.
We designs food-producing landscapes adapted to the Estrie climate (Zone 4b), to the clay soils common in certain areas, and to the realities of long winters. Each project is designed to last, evolve, and integrate naturally into the surrounding landscape.

On the picture above, the clients were eager to explore new edible perennials and shrubs they could bring from the backyard straight into their kitchen. At the same time, they longed for a space where they could truly enjoy being outdoors — a place to slow down, share meals, and unwind. The design we created weaves together abundant, food-producing plantings with a cozy, shaded, and dry retreat beneath a pergolas — a restful haven that invites connection, comfort, and simple everyday moments outside.
The picture beside shows a newly made fruit orchard in a flower meadow. Both humans and fauna are content.

A Thoughtful and Sustainable Approach
Edible landscaping is an approach where ornamental plants are replaced — in whole or in part — with:
-
Hardy fruit and nut trees
-
Edible perennials vegetables.
-
Culinary and medicinal herbs
-
Berries, berries and more berries! (we think berries are a must if you have land)
-
Vegetable gardens integrated into the overall design
The goal is not only to produce food, but to create a harmonious, multifunctional, and resilient outdoor space.
We prioritize:
-
Hardy plant varieties adapted to the Estrie region
-
A strong perennial structure
-
Compositions inspired by natural local landscapes and "niche" nurseries.
-
Landscape plans designed to evolve over several years.
The objective is to create a space that gains richness and maturity over time and fits the clients's vision.
Properties in the townships often feature:
-
Interesting slopes that can be thoughtfully integrated
-
Partially shaded areas in established neighborhoods
-
Heavy soils that require improvement
-
Significant deer presence in peripheral areas
We incorporate these parameters from the very beginning of the design process to optimize the sustainability.

Here is a food forest on the first year. We can see some of the annuals grew quickly while the shrubs and perennials are still settling. This type of specific landscape takes time and maintenance to establish.
